Jared Mercadante

  • Qualifications/Work Experience: I possess a Professional Bachelors degree in Architecture. Prior to coming to Shelter, I worked in a variety of architecture-related fields, from residential design to commercial office planning
  • What are you doing now? I am currently preparing for school in the fall (2009), where I will continue my education with a Masters degree in Urban Development Planning from the University College of London. This degree will provide me with the strategic knowledge and capabilities to work as an urban planner in the developing countries of Asia, Africa, and South America.
  • How would you describe your Shelter experience? The experiences and friendships I made while working for Shelter and living in India have positively shaped my future and career. Until now, I haven’t had a more rewarding experience. I cherish the year I spent in India and am so grateful to Shelter for giving me the opportunity.
  • What did you learn from your time with Shelter? I’ve learned through work the dynamics involved with urban development. I have learned that it is important to understand all the integral parties, from the slum dweller to the local representatives, and involve them throughout the process from start to finish. My social experiences have exposed me to the kind, welcoming nature of the Indian people. Traveling by bus and living with local residents has opened my eyes to the beautiful Indian culture, food, and country.
  • My message to future volunteers is… to leave your predetermined expectations and prejudices at home, stay calm and patient in an unfamiliar environment, be open to new experiences, and live your time in India as the locals around you. Enjoy the beauty and diversity of India to the fullest, because you are embarking on one of the richest experiences in life!
