Gita Vir was born in Karachi, Sindh in 1936, and migrated to Delhi in 1948, following India’s partition. She completed her schooling at The Convent of Jesus and Mary, and finished college at Miranda House, with Economics Honors. In 1978, Gita and her family settled in Pune, which she considers “my first real home.” Here, she worked as a volunteer in Balwadis and for dropouts in slum schools. The growing heaps of garbage led Gita to become an environmentalist. This resulted in her becoming a civic activist, raising issues concerning the Pune Municipal Corporation, Cantonment, Police, and other departments. Gita Vir is a founding member of The National Society for Clean Cities (NSCC) in Pune since 1978, and recently retired as President. Her involvement as a Shelter Associates Trust Member has spanned nearly a decade. A devotee of the Ramakrishna Mission since birth, Gita considers all of the above services as seva to her city and nation.
