Shelter Associates Slum Data System


As part of the work that Shelter Associates (SA) does, the SA social workers conduct surveys of the slums. Each structure of the slum is surveyed, and classified as amenities, community toilet, residential, shop or unknown. The SA social workers complete a socio-economic questionnaire for each residential structure. All this data is then entered into a database, and then cleaned-up to remove any errors introduced during data entry. The data is then used to write detailed reports of the conditions in each slum. This data can then be used by SA, other NGOs and local government to improve the facilities and infrastructure available in the slums.
