My journey with Shelter Associates has been centered around understanding cities through data, spatial analysis, and grassroots engagement. Under the Aakanksha Nagar Yojana — the Aspirational Cities Program of the Government of Uttar Pradesh — I have had the opportunity to work across Mohanlalganj Nagar Panchayat, Banthra Nagar Panchayat, and currently Ramsanehi Ghat Nagar Panchayat.
Our work focuses on strengthening city systems through GIS-based mapping, household surveys, infrastructure assessments, and detailed spatial analysis. Through extensive fieldwork, we map housing conditions, sanitation access, water infrastructure, livelihood patterns, and other critical urban indicators that help Nagar Panchayats better understand and plan their cities.

A major part of this process has been continuous engagement with elected ward members, Executive Officers (EOs), and Chairpersons of the respective Nagar Panchayats. During surveys and infrastructure mapping exercises, these interactions help us understand local expectations, identify key challenges, and discuss how data-driven and planned development approaches can support the future growth of Nagar Panchayats.
Alongside fieldwork, I have also had the opportunity to work from the Directorate of Urban Local Bodies office in Lucknow, where I interact closely with the PMU team and senior officials including Directors, Deputy Directors, Assistant Directors, and Additional Directors. This creates an important connection between on-ground realities and administrative decision-making, ensuring that field observations and spatial analysis contribute towards informed actions at the government level.
What has been particularly encouraging is the appreciation the work has received both at the Nagar Panchayat and Directorate levels. The initiative has often been recognized as one of the first projects of its kind in Uttar Pradesh to undertake such extensive GIS-based mapping and granular data creation at this scale. The detailed spatial datasets and field-based analysis have generated strong interest and support among officials and local stakeholders.

What excites me most about Shelter Associates is its people-centered and data-driven approach towards city development. The organization combines technology with grassroots engagement in a way that makes urban issues visible, understandable, and actionable. Over time, this journey has shown me how meaningful planning begins with accurate data, community engagement, and a strong understanding of realities on the ground.
Working across these Nagar Panchayats has been a deeply enriching experience, reinforcing my belief that data and spatial analysis can play a transformative role in strengthening emerging urban centers across Uttar Pradesh.
